I Always Feel Like Somebody’s Watching Me

While watching the American Event of the Century (aka Kim Kardashian’s wedding on E!) over the weekend, I saw an ad for MyLife.com and decided to do some investigating.  After about an hour of exploring the landscape of MyLife.com, I was reminded just how powerful the Internet is in tracking down individuals.  And maybe this isn’t always a good thing.

One of the questions that people ask in the Skiptracing class that we teach here in the library is, “How can I make it so people can’t find me?”  With hundreds of people search databases, removing your name and personal data from the Internet is a tedious task.  Thankfully, there are companies out there that can help.  One company named Reputation Defender (RD) has been doing the business that many frustrated people are trying to accomplish: remove personal information from the Internet with automated process and continuously monitor personal information on a daily basis. Bloomberg Eats BNA

By , August 26, 2011 8:15 am

The Wall Street Journal reports a recent purchase involving Bloomberg and BNA. What appears obvious is that Bloomberg will add BNA’s abilities to its law division, Bloomberg Law. The move should position Bloomberg to better compete with the big two legal research databases, LexisNexis and Thomson West. Librarians of course will keep their eyes peeled for new developments and hopefully the competition will breed better legal information and access (good news so long as the portfolios don’t physically disappear).

An advanced AALL PLL/SIS PERSPECTIVES article

This 30 minute PLL program quickly reviewed the fee-based and free resources we may consult to help us determine the best resources for reliable patent statistics. Amy Wisinski, of Winning the Case, sped through a number of resources which I will briefly summarize.

The USPTO has added a new Patent Dashboard to their statistical analysis page. This is visually appealing but summarizes only recent activity. The USPTO continues to offer statistical analysis based on calendar or fiscal year in html or pdf. The EPO provides patent filing statistics back to 2001 in a downloadable spreadsheet. WIPO also provides access to filing statistics such as the number of filings, granted, in force and intensity.  The WIPO data is particularly dense and in some cases goes back as far as 1883. The first thing we noticed when stepping off the plane in Philadelphia was the heat.  Did I say “notice”?  Better put, when we stepped off the plane in Philadelphia, we were hit with a blast of heat that remained with us for several days.  Someone in the airport told us it was 101 degrees, and this was around 4:30 p.m.  You know how they say “it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity”?  In Philadelphia it’s both.  Enough about the weather already (but trust me, it was memorable!).

What a great conference this year!  I divided my time between Chapter Leadership Training, the Private Law Libraries Special Interest Section Summit: Change as Action, and some really great programs.  Saturday morning the Council of Chapter Presidents put on a Chapter Leadership Training session for newly-elected Chapter Presidents and Vice Presidents/Presidents Elect.  This meeting covered all that a Pres/VP needs to know in order to navigate his/her way through the 3 year commitment to an AALL Chapter.  Diane Rodriguez, outgoing President of the Council of Chapter Presidents, guided us through the ins and outs of resources available to us and introduced each speaker.  We learned about everything from Annual Meeting Programming to Preparing a Chapter Annual Report, and more.  We were each given a handbook to go along with the presentations. The Library as a Service

Shortly after the Seattle Public Library opened, I conducted surveys of public library patrons for credit.  I needed the credits for my MLIS and the act of interviewing library patrons met one of the requirements of the MLIS portfolio.  The survey results were later published in an article Seattle public library as place: Nonparametric analyses of community perceptions and attitudes. Now, 7 years later, I’m reflecting on the idea of library as place.  This in the midst of a renovation that has separated our librarians from the main collection of books by over 30 floors (and a separate elevator bank) and temporarily eliminated a central place for our patrons to visit for assistance.
