It’s The End of the World as We Know It

Not to alarm anyone but the end of the world is nigh.  As we usher in 2012, let’s not shy away from addressing the serious elephant in the room (no, not that 2012 was a somewhat awful movie that makes my heart weep for the 80’s and 90’s John Cusack).  According to the Mayans, on December 21, 2012 we will witness the end of this known world.  Which begs the question:  what should I read in order to prepare?

Even though NASA keeps claiming that 2012 will be like any other year, full of exciting things like Kim Kardashian’s third and fourth weddings, others are not so sure.  So in an effort to ready myself for the coming apocalypse, I pulled out the library card and checked out the following:

  • Man v. Wild, by Bear Grylls.  When was the last time you stripped naked and jumped into a bog?  You haven’t?  What if you had to? Bear addresses how to do this and so much more.  So if 2012 includes the need to escape situations when undressed, this book has you covered.
  • The Zombie Survival Guide, by Max Brooks.  The Mayans never delved into the details of WHAT would happen.  So if the nuclear plant finally goes and reanimates a bunch of corpses, I want to be ready to protect my brains.  Also, it’s an excuse to show off my shooting prowess.
  • Survival, by Russell Honore.  I actually checked this book out to read the list of supplies that it would take to survive in the wake of a catastrophic event.  It turns out my “Emergency Kit” of beef jerky, beer and battery operated DVD player is not going to cut it.

So, fellow LLOPSters, please be safe this New Year and don’t forget to pack waterproof matches on your person at all times.
