The Law of E-books: AALL October Webinar
Is your library providing your users with access to e-books? Does the library have perpetual rights to the files, or will the files become inaccessible to users after a period of time? What clauses should the library pay special attention to when negotiating licenses? Are the e-books the library provides accessible to users with print disabilities? What privacy laws govern the readers’ use of e-books? This webinar will address all of these questions, and give participants an opportunity to share experiences and ask questions of their own.

Sunday morning’s keynote speech drew in a pretty full house. Hundreds sat and listened to presenter David Weinberger discuss the state of libraries’ metadata. It’s a mess, he said, but something can be done about that: it can be ordered and repackaged as regular data. This begs the question: what is the difference between data and metadata? That’s a squishy topic. Libraries may objectively nonetheless repurpose data generated by means such as description or use into discoverable and shareable content. Doing so would, in Weinberger’s terms, be awesome. Awesome stuff gets the word out about a library’s resources and value.

The AALL 2013 tidal wave has come and gone:
As we return to work and begin chipping away at a backlog of assignments, let’s reflect on how wonderfully LLOPS served the greater AALL community over the last several days. The hustle and bustle of LLOPS members volunteering at bag stuffing, hospitality and registration between attending programs, SIS events, committee meetings, workshops was truly amazing. Go LLOPS!

Prior to AALL’s keynote a special thanks went out to two LLOPSters for their hard work, serving as Local Arrangement Committee Chairs. LLOPS is proud to have hosted the conference this year and we are certainly proud of Rita and Tina! Thanks to everyone who volunteered too, you made this year very special.

The polls are open for a proposed amendment change to the AALL Bylaws. Ken Hirsh at Ipso Facto sums it up:
The most controversial of these is to expand the definition of active membership to include anyone who is interested in the objectives of the association. If adopted by the membership, this would allow those employed at information vendors and other non-library/non-information center settings to serve on the executive board.
Not to be missed, there is a FAQ page and healthy conversation (with links to other blog posts) for further clarification and specifics. While it is for the individual member to decide and rare for LLOPS to take an official stance on matters such as this; we have decided to take an official and perhaps unprecedented position.
