My trip began bright and early at the Chapter Summit program. Some of the day’s events involved member recruitment, retention, and engagement, and why change is an opportunity. Setting the stage is the AALL Mission:

AALL Mission

“The American Association of Law Libraries advances the profession of law librarianship and supports the professional growth of its members through leadership and advocacy in the field of legal information and information policy.”

Mary Whisner Receives Mersky Spirit of Law Librarianship Award

By , July 8, 2014 10:19 am

Mary Whisner (a LLOPS member and Reference Librarian at the University of Washington’s Gallagher Law Library) has received the Roy M. Mersky Spirit of Law Librarianship Award for her work with the Youth Tutoring Program sponsored by Catholic Community Services of Western Washington.

From the nominating letter:

Since 2004 [Mary] has tutored youth on a weekly basis offering academic support and serving as a role model and friend to the students. The program targets six low and middle income housing communities in Seattle. Thus, most of Mary’s work has been with immigrants from eastern Africa and Southeast Asia. Mary’s commitment to this program and her volunteer work make a difference in many kids’ lives.

Congratulations Mary!

At the beginning of June, I attended a special program on Competitive Intelligence at SLA in Vancouver.  The speaker was CI pro, Zena Applebaum.  Zena’s goal was to empower the librarians and information professionals in the audience to “draw your own conclusions.”  Librarians who don’t regularly do CI as part of their jobs typically stop at step 2 in the CI cycle (below).  It’s time we started closing the loop.  Our end goal when we do CI should be to mobilize the end user so that they are decision-ready.

Filters and Ambiguity

AALL offered their third Leadership Academy this month (prior academies were held in 2009 and 2011). Two days in Oak Brook, Illinois were filled with learning, hands-on exercises, and networking. Over those days Gail Johnson and Pam Parr, of Face to Face Communications and Training, conveyed the skills and assessment factors needed in quality leadership. Gail and Pam offered a healthy amount of laughter and their Laurel & Hardy routines kept the event lively. Their message relied on proven methods, contemporary studies and surveys, and experiential wisdom.

You may have already heard that the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Annual Conference and Information Expo will be held on June 8-10, just a train ride away in Vancouver, BC. As a member of the SLA Legal Division Executive Board and the SLA Pacific Northwest Chapter, I encourage you to think about attending. SLA membership is a mix of legal, corporate, government, medical, museum and other information professionals. The annual conference presents an opportunity to meet librarians of all kinds of specializations.

Registration and travel information can be found on the conference website. The SLA Western Canada Chapter has a great website with local Vancouver information (which might come in handy if you are planning a visit at any time). If you want to take a closer look at what sessions and meetings will be offered, head over to the conference online planner. I’ve listed some sessions that I plan to attend:

  • 60 Sites in 60 Seconds – A popular session every year introducing you to websites that you can use at work or at home. The topics range from desktop sharing to language learning to foodie blogs.
  • Analysis of Patent and Other Large Bibliographic Data Sets
  • Bringing Parks to the People: Online Access to the Scenery and History of Our National Parks
  • Legal Division Unconference – This is always an interesting session because any topic can come up.

Of course, there is always the IT Dance Party to look forward to and the Legal Division has a breakfast and business meeting every year where award winners are recognized. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have. I hope you take a minute to consider going to Vancouver this year. I think you will find it to be a rewarding professional experience.

If you missed the LLOPS meeting last week, this blog post (and its embedded cuteness) may serve as consolation.

Foster Pepper hosted the meeting and invited Celeste Walsen, DVM and Ellen O’Neill-Stephens, JD of the Courthouse Dogs Foundation to speak to LLOPS members with their courthouse dog, Molly B.  Their presentation covered how Ellen O’Neill-Stephens came up with the Courthouse Dogs Foundation and its touching impact across the country and beyond!  The Courthouse Dogs Foundation was recently nominated for a HiiL ( Hague Institute for the Internationalisation of Law) Innovating Justice Award – winners will be announced next month!  If you’d like to learn more about the Courthouse Dogs Foundation, visit their Facebook page and check out their website for more information!

The Law of E-books: AALL October Webinar

Is your library providing your users with access to e-books? Does the library have perpetual rights to the files, or will the files become inaccessible to users after a period of time? What clauses should the library pay special attention to when negotiating licenses? Are the e-books the library provides accessible to users with print disabilities? What privacy laws govern the readers’ use of e-books? This webinar will address all of these questions, and give participants an opportunity to share experiences and ask questions of their own.

Register by October 21.

AALL2go Pick of the Month

AALL’s Continuing Professional Education Committee presents the AALL2go pick of the month: Recharge: The Look of Leadership Today: What It Is – and What It Isn’t.

Effective leadership can have a profound impact on libraries of every kind. This presentation encourages librarians to think about leaders in a new way and to challenge common myths of leadership. The presenters use an entertaining and energetic approach to engage the audience and demonstrate why everyone in an organization should be viewed as a potential leader.
