At the beginning of June, I attended a special program on Competitive Intelligence at SLA in Vancouver.  The speaker was CI pro, Zena Applebaum.  Zena’s goal was to empower the librarians and information professionals in the audience to “draw your own conclusions.”  Librarians who don’t regularly do CI as part of their jobs typically stop at step 2 in the CI cycle (below).  It’s time we started closing the loop.  Our end goal when we do CI should be to mobilize the end user so that they are decision-ready.

Your LLOPS Grants Committee wants to remind you that we are able to fund three early-bird registrations ($520 each) for the 2012 AALL Annual Meeting in Boston, July 21-24. In addition to the two LLOPS-funded registrations, our chapter qualifies for one AALL Chapter Registration Award. Applications are due to the Grants Committee by May 9, 2012.  Conference early-bird registration deadline is June 15.

Preference will be given to LLOPS members who have not received a grant in the last 3 years and who have actively contributed to the Law Librarians of Puget Sound. The AALL-provided grant is to encourage attendance by newer members.

The 2010-2011 LLOPS Grants Committee, with members Jan Lawrence and Bridget Dacres and Dawn Kendrick Gibb, Chair, awarded grants to three members during the year.

The budget for the 2010-2011 year was $1,500, slightly more than we enjoyed the previous year. We were able to support members who wished to take advantage of significant professional development opportunities.

In January, 2011, the committee awarded $285 to Kim Ositis (Reference Services Librarian, Public Law Library of King County) so she could attend DrupalCon 2011 in Chicago from March 7-10.  Kim learned basic as well as more advanced features of Drupal, the open-source content management system which will power the new PLLKC website. Great Ideas for March: 2011 LLOPS Workshop

by Erin Hoffrance

I had the opportunity to attend the 2011 LLOPS Professional Development Workshop held at the Seattle University School of Law Annex. And I have to say, what a great location! It was also the first time in two years that I was able to enjoy the program without the stress of being a member of the Professional Development Committee. The first session, Mining SEC Documents, was led by Elizabeth Osborne, who is very knowledgeable about the world of the SEC, filings, documents, etc. Her handout listed definitions of the most common SEC documents, and she discussed the types of information you can find within each type of document. This is truly great information for those reference requests I receive to research public companies. For instance, the 8-K has unusual events, so it might be beneficial to monitor those for any types of changes that occur between 10-K and 10-Q filings. The Workshop attendees had many questions for Elizabeth, and she answered them all quickly with her wealth of knowledge and handy tips. Continue reading 'Great Ideas for March: 2011 LLOPS Workshop'»
