AALL Members are invited to join the Leadership Development Committee’s webinar entitled Anticipate as a Strategic Leader, on Thursday, May 28, 2015, at 11:00-11:45 am Central time.  The webinar is presented without cost to members of AALL.

Guest speaker Franklin Shen, consultant with Decision Strategies International, will introduce participants to the six elements of strategic thinking, highlighting one of them:  Anticipate: Focusing on the need for leaders to anticipate,  be prepared for, and lead through change.  Webinar participants will learn how to examine outside and inside forces and expand their own strategic thinking capability.

Moderated by Patrick Butler, Electronic Resources and Reference Librarian, University of Connecticut School of Law Library, this event is the precursor to the upcoming program entitled Thinking Ahead: Encouraging Strategic Thinking in the Library at the AALL Annual Meeting and Conference.  Mark your calendar and join us for the webinar.

As part of National Library Week, the RIPS Teach-In Kit Committee is pleased to announce that the 2015 Teach-In Kit is now live.  This year’s kit includes a number of legal research exercises, tutorials, and presentations on topics such as intellectual property, taxation, regulatory, and statutory research.  The kit also includes a terms and connectors activity, a legal research handout geared toward visual learners, and an in-class exercise that pits indexes, keywords, and tables of contents against each other  Thanks to all our contributors and to the members of our committee.

Save the date for the AALL Business Skills Clinic, a two-day intensive experience designed to give you skills in strategic planning, managerial finance, human resources, negotiations, and marketing/communications. The program will be held October 16-17 at the Hyatt Chicago Magnificent Mile Hotel in Chicago. The AALL Leadership Development Committee calls for nominations for the 2015 Emerging Leader Award.The award recognizes newer members in their first 10 years of law library experience who have already made significant contributions to the Association and/or to the profession and have demonstrated the potential for leadership and continuing service. The Emerging Leader Award is presented to the recipient at AALL Annual Meeting.It is given in the name of the Association and carries with it a $500 cash prize.

Do you know an unsung hero/heroine-volunteer in AALL? If you know an AALL member who has made a significant contribution to the work of AALL, but has not served on the AALL Executive Board or received any of the AALL awards for distinguished service,* please nominate them for the Volunteer Service Award!

Nominees can be recognized for:

  • Volunteer service at annual meetings (Registration, Family Social Hour, Library Tours, etc.)
  • Volunteer service with special projects (i.e. annual meeting service projects)
  • Presenting educational programs at AALL Annual Meetings
  • Chairing an SIS or serving as chapter president
  • Chairing an AALL or SIS committee
  • Representing AALL in an official capacity to an outside entity
  • Active service as a member of an AALL or SIS committee

Application Information: Download Volunteer Service Award Nomination Form; Submission of up to three letters of support is encouraged.

Deadline: February 1, 2015

Award Presentation: The award will be a plaque given in the name of the Association and presented during the AALL Annual Meeting.

AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers

The “Call for Papers” has begun! Turn your great idea into an award winning paper for this prestigious competition. The AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers Committee is soliciting unpublished papers in the following four divisions:

  1. Open: AALL members with 5 or more years of experience
  2. New Member: AALL members with less than 5 years of experience
  3. Short Form: All AALL members; Shorter-length articles
  4. Student: 2014-15 Law School or Library School students

Deadlines are:

  • March 2, 2015 for the Open, New Member, and Short Form Divisions
  • May 15, 2015 for the Student Division

Winners in the Open, New Member, and Student Divisions will each receive $650, and the Short Form Division winner will receive $300, all generously donated by LexisNexis.
