I can’t believe that six months have gone by since I started my term as LLOPS president. It seems like only yesterday I was in July-hot Boston completing chapter leadership training at the AALL conference and here I am today writing the winter president’s message. This past year was lots of fun: our Halloween party meeting provided a fun break with good food and fun with glue guns (thanks, Kim Ositis!); we had happy hour at Gordon Biersch and we capped the year off with our wonderful holiday party. The party was very nice with great food and a fabulous location. Thanks very much again to Thomson Reuters for sponsoring our annual event and to Heather Heen, Kim Ositis and Amy Eaton for all of their hard work with planning/hosting.

I am looking forward to 2013: we’ll have our first business meeting of the year at the end of January and in May we will have a visit from AALL President Jean Wenger. Then of course in July we get to experience AALL in Seattle! Plenty of LLOPS members are working on local arrangements and hopefully many of us will plan to attend. This year’s meeting is sure to be one of the best ever.

Happy New Year!

I was a sorority girl. Yes, it’s true. When I was an undergrad at the University of Cincinnati, I was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. Joining a sorority was a pretty big deal for me because I had always been very content with having only a few close friends and with keeping a low profile. In high school I didn’t play sports or participate in student groups. I did work part time at a bowling alley (yes, that’s true, too) so I wasn’t a total slacker. The wallflower role was always a comfortable one for me so joining a group of women, many of whom were active leaders in the sorority and in university student life, was a big step.

I can’t say that after joining I did a 180 and became “Miss Campus Activities” because…um…that didn’t happen. Not even close. I did learn some things though and one lesson frequently plays in my head when I am thinking about LLOPS.  The sorority’s leaders used to emphasize this message: “You only get out of it what you put into it.” In other words, if you don’t actively participate then you will miss out on a lot of the benefits that come from being a part of the organization. Too bad I didn’t really follow their advice back then. Continue reading 'President’s Message'»

LLOPS President’s Message, June 28, 2012

Perhaps this should be entitled “Immediate Past President’s Message”, as Jennifer Hill assumed the title of LLOPS President June 27, at the LLOPS Business Meeting held at noon at Perkins Coie.  Still, I owe the membership one last message as LLOPS President, so here it is.

It was great to have served as President this past year.  At the meeting, I thanked many of you for your assistance this past year, serving on or chairing a LLOPS committee, providing me with input when requested, and for a few special accomplishments.  The winner of the President’s Award for Excellence went to Barbara Swatt Engstrom, for another year of planning and executing an excellent series of monthly programs.  Barbara also served on the Professional Development Workshop Committee, and was instrumental in both getting Ron Wheeler, our AALL Executive Board member, here for our Chapter Visit and planning a full day of activities, tours, and visits for Ron.  Barbara, you are indeed excellent! Have you read the Velvet Chainsaw Report?  (“Observations & Recommendations, American Association of Law Libraries” / Velvet Chainsaw Consulting).   The nickname of the Report alone piqued my interest – picture it – a velvet chainsaw, cutting and carving oh so softly!  The Report came out in October 2011 and I’ve just gotten around to downloading it thanks to my involvement with the Seattle 2013 Local Arrangements Committee.   I’ve been reading it during my ferry commute this past week, digesting a little bit at a time.  It’s really fascinating!

If you’ve ever attended an AALL Annual Meeting & Conference, or ever intend to, you should read this Report in its entirety.  It is an analysis of AALL’s AM&C start to finish, including comments as to what’s working, what isn’t working, and specific recommendations for change, beginning with the whole process of submitting program ideas.  The Report is backed-up with some very interesting attachments, such as “Defining education, information & learning” and “Three types of adult learners”. Ok that might sound a bit dry, but it’s really not, IMHO.  The Report is well-done, thorough, and honest.  Check it out here:

At a recent Kitsap Medical Society charitable event, I had the good luck to be seated next to an emergency room physician from Harrison Medical Center.  I’d met him a few months earlier in the year when we took him, his wife, and several of his close friends out on his birthday cruise on Dye’s Inlet.  (I never did catch just which birthday it was we were celebrating, as I kept busy pouring wine and serving hors d’oeuvres.) Trying to think of something to say at the gala, I resisted my first urge to come right out and ask how old he was (he looks very young), but instead asked how everything has been since I’d seen him last, on his birthday cruise.  After several glasses of wine (for both), it was easy to ask as a follow-up question, “So, was that a significant birthday?”  He hesitated for split second then told me how old he was. Then I told him that we are the same age (true).  He looked reflective for a moment then quipped, “That went fast, didn’t it!”  I had to smile wryly and agree.  Where did all those years go? The first thing we noticed when stepping off the plane in Philadelphia was the heat.  Did I say “notice”?  Better put, when we stepped off the plane in Philadelphia, we were hit with a blast of heat that remained with us for several days.  Someone in the airport told us it was 101 degrees, and this was around 4:30 p.m.  You know how they say “it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity”?  In Philadelphia it’s both.  Enough about the weather already (but trust me, it was memorable!).

What a great conference this year!  I divided my time between Chapter Leadership Training, the Private Law Libraries Special Interest Section Summit: Change as Action, and some really great programs.  Saturday morning the Council of Chapter Presidents put on a Chapter Leadership Training session for newly-elected Chapter Presidents and Vice Presidents/Presidents Elect.  This meeting covered all that a Pres/VP needs to know in order to navigate his/her way through the 3 year commitment to an AALL Chapter.  Diane Rodriguez, outgoing President of the Council of Chapter Presidents, guided us through the ins and outs of resources available to us and introduced each speaker.  We learned about everything from Annual Meeting Programming to Preparing a Chapter Annual Report, and more.  We were each given a handbook to go along with the presentations. The investiture of new LLOPS officers means summer can’t be too far off now. Spring was big for Government Relations. Special congratulations to Tina Ching, Lori Fossum, Kris Henderson and Kay Newman for their special efforts in completing the Washington State Legal Inventory. Spring also brought passage of HB 1479 to promote authentication and continued publication of primary legal materials, and the committee’s coordinated effort with AALL Government Relations to avoid death-knell reductions to State Law Library funding (thanks to all who contacted legislators). Though safe for now, the Library (and LLOPS) will have to make do without Dawn Kendrick Gibbs, who is stepping down for quality time with her grandchild. Continue reading 'President’s Message'»

LLOPS March Madness got off to a running, or walking, start with the KCBA 5K. We almost took the team competition our first time out with a little help from friends and family. Thanks to Jennifer Hill for serving as team captain, Richard Jost and Lori Fossum who provided “uniforms” and the rest of Team LLOPS:  Jill Allyn, Amy Eaton, Holly Gale, and Robyn Hagle.

LLOPS was also well represented at this year’s Sunshine Week Webcast. The Webcast, featuring the Administration’s Open Government Initiative and options for making agency information most helpful to taxpayers, was enlightening but eclipsed by the lively after discussion led by Peggy Roebuck Jarrett and Mary Whisner. President's Message: Easier Being Green?

I used to think of myself as a recycling freak. Braving the monster paper cutter during my King County days to remove bindings so the pages might be recycled. Collecting the glass our buildings weren’t ready to recycle and lugging it to our home bins. Retaining books that should have been weeded to spare the landfills.

Times have changed. I feel a bit left behind when I see sustainability being our firm’s largest committee; the ubiquitous compostable utensils and can anyone spare a car for my two o’clock in Bellevue emails from all of our partners who never drive anymore; the refusal to support box lunch vendors with their wasteful packaging; the raised eyebrow instead of approval when you recycle that bottled water – what possessed you to buy bottled water in the first place? The best thing LLOPS does is bring librarians together. The Program Committee has charted another stellar year, kicking off with its series of management programs. That almost gets us to spring’s professional development workshop – Kerry Fitz-Gerald and Barbara Holt have agreed to co-chair the PDC this year and are looking for a few good members to join.

Let’s do more than that. I will be leaning on the Social Committee to get us out more this year and pushing for another Big Lebowski night at the Garage. You should also join the LLOPS team for the KCBA 5K run/walk(most likely the first Sunday in March). Come run/walk circles around the lawyers while supporting KCBA’s Neighborhood Legal Clinics. Fair notice to those of you who insist on training for these things. Continue reading 'President's Message'»
